About Kala Virasat
Kala Virasat is a digital storytelling initiative that documents India’s intangible cultural heritage — through conversations with artists, musicians, artisans and practitioners. It focuses on practices that are lived, passed on and still evolving, but that often remain undocumented.
Most of it was never written down
India’s cultural knowledge lives in a singer’s memory, an artisan’s hands, a grandmother’s story. It changes with each retelling, and it disappears quietly when a practitioner stops. Kala Virasat records it while it is still being practised — not as a museum piece, but as living work.

Voices, journeys and lived experience: how someone learned, what they inherited, what they are changing, and what they are afraid of losing.
Music Tradition
Folk, classical, devotional and regional soundscapes — and the people who carry them: qawwals, dhrupad singers, Braj folk musicians, the hijra-community singers of Rang-e-Lok.

The processes, tools and hands behind the making — marble inlay (parchin kari), zardozi, and the smaller trades that rarely get filmed.
