Description
Begin at the Taj Mahal — the people who built it and the woman it was built for, the grief and power tangled into it, and the older Agra of weavers and traders whose city this was before the Mughals. Then Itmad-ud-Daula, the tomb Nur Jahan raised for her father a generation earlier, where the craft of the Taj was first worked out. End at Mehtab Bagh as the light drops, seeing the Taj from the garden it was framed for. Led by an artist and storyteller from Agra, not a monument guide — about four hours, afternoon into sunset.
How it unfolds
- The Taj Mahal, early, with our Making of a Wonder reading — how it was designed, engineered and built.
- Itmad-ud-Daula, the riverside jewel box: pietra dura, lattice screens, and the women who commissioned it.
- Mehtab Bagh at golden hour — the Mughal garden directly across the Yamuna, and the Taj from the side most visitors never see.
